Blue Sky Social Justice Fund currently provides grants in the areas of statelessness, climate justice, LGBTQI+ rights, modern slavery, human rights, water justice, and Indigenous peoples’ development and justice. We focus on these critical social justice issues because they are less often supported by philanthropy and government donors than causes like humanitarian relief, education, and healthcare. Likewise, we focus primarily on places in the Global South and East where, despite great need and opportunity, there is very limited giving.
We believe frontline activists and those personally affected are often in the best position to identify and implement solutions. Typically, we seek to provide the long-term resources that enable local leaders to protect and promote the rights of their communities. We know enduring and substantive change cannot be achieved with short-term resource commitments.
We see risk-taking as essential to effective philanthropy. If every grant we make and group we support is successful, we will have failed because it means we are making only safe bets. Few of the pressing issues the world is facing can be solved with only safe bets.
